Speculation about Apple possibly bringing back Touch ID in its next iPhones has been dispelled by recent claims from a trustworthy source on the Chinese social media site Weibo. In contrast to current speculation, the Weibo leaker—who has a reputation for providing reliable Apple-related leaks—said that Apple has no plans to bring back Touch ID. The leaker continued by claiming that a sizable chunk of Apple's Touch ID production infrastructure has been turned off, suggesting that the company has no immediate intentions to integrate this technology into its products. MacRumors has reported that this evidence dispels the rumor that Apple's flagship iPhones would soon include Touch ID again.
Long-running rumors suggest that Apple may be working on an under-screen Touch ID for future iPhone models, which runs counter to the company's stated attitude and technological advancement. The introduction of Face ID by Apple with the iPhone X in 2017 marked a significant shift, emphasizing its increased level of security over Touch ID. Apple said that Touch ID, which had a one in 50,000 chance of being hacked, was far less secure than Face ID. The chances of Face ID are one in a million.
With Apple's steadfast dedication to device security, it seems improbable that they would go back to a less secure technology. In addition to its security drawbacks, Touch ID also has useful difficulties, like being difficult to use with damp fingers or when hands are full.
Face ID, on the other hand, provides more convenience together with improved security.
Given the current dominance of Face ID, rumors of Touch ID making a comeback—either in the iPhone SE 4 or as a novel under-screen version—seem improbable. It is unlikely that Apple will revert to less safe and user-friendly technologies given their history of innovation in security and user experience.
